• Switzerland 01-05 Spain: After keeping a clean sheet in all three matches in Group A, the Swiss defense conceded a goal to Aitana BONMATÍ in the fifth minute. Bonmatí added a second later on as four of her teammates also got on the scoresheet.
• Japan 03-01 Norway: The Nadeshiko took the lead on an own goal in the fifteenth minute. Guro REITEN equalised with a header five minutes later. Shortly after halftime, however, Risa SHIMIZU found net to put Japan in front for good.
• Netherlands 02-00 South Africa: Jill ROORD headed in her fourth goal of the tournament nine minutes in, and the Oranje never looked back.
• Sweden 00-00 United States [F/OT; pen: 05-04]: The US’s reign at the top ended after eight years, as Sweden keeper Zecira MUSOVIC made eleven saves to keep a clean sheet. In the seventh round of the penalty shootout, Kelley O’HARA hit the post, followed by Lina HURTIG’s shot seemingly saved by Alyssa NAEHER. Following video review, however, the ball was deemed to have crossed the line, sending Sweden through and consigning the US to their earliest ever exit.
• England 00-00 Nigeria [F/OT; pen: 04-02]: The Super Falcons kept England’s vaunted attack off the scoresheet, and they were handed a massive advantage when Lauren JAMES was sent off in the 87th minute for an ill tempered stomp on Michelle ALOZIE’s back. But with no goals coming in extra time, the penalty shootout arrived. Chloe KELLY scored the decisive spot kick to earn the Three Lionesses a fifth consecutive trip to the quarterfinals.
• Australia 02-00 Denmark: Caitlin FOORD and Hayley RASO scored on either side of the interval as the Matildas moved on. The 75,000 at Stadium Australia were further delighted by Sam KERR’s first appearance of the tournament following a calf injury.
• Colombia 01-00 Jamaica: Catalina USME scored just after the break to earn the Cafeteras’ first ever win in an elimination phase match. It was the Reggae Girlz’ first and only goal conceded in the tournament.
• France 04-00 Morocco: Two goals by Eugénie LE SOMMER led les Bleues into the quarterfinals, as Morocco’s dream run came to an end.
