Group H recap
[THU 03 AUG 2023 – 12:46:41 UTC]
Colombia and Morocco advanced from Group H at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Germany and Korea Rep were eliminated.
The Cafeteras opened with a 2-0 win over Korea Rep. Early in the second half against Germany, Linda CAICEDO put Colombia in front on a powerful strike from the top of the area. Alexandra POPP equalised on a late penalty, but deep into stoppage time, Colombia claimed all three points on a header by Manuela VANEGAS.
Morocco’s first ever match at a Women’s World Cup was a heavy 6-0 defeat to Germany, but they recovered by defeating Korea Rep 1-0. Needing a win against Colombia and help from the Korea Rep-Germany match, the Atlas Lionesses were awarded a penalty late in the first half. Catalina PÉREZ saved Ghizlane CHEBBAK’s spot kick, but in the resulting scramble, Anissa LAHMARI put away the rebound. Morocco held on for a 1-0 win, and with Germany mustering only a 1-1 draw with Korea Rep, both Colombia and Morocco progressed to the round of 16. Morocco, at 72nd, became the lowest team in the FIFA rankings ever to reach the elimination phase, whilst second placed Germany became the highest ranked team ever to be eliminated in the group phase.
In the round of 16, Colombia will meet Jamaica on TUE 08 AUG 2023 in Melbourne/Naarm, VIC. Morocco will face France in Adelaide/Tarntanya, SA, later in the day.
