Australia and Nigeria advanced as the top two teams in Group B of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, with Canada and Ireland Rep eliminated.

The Matildas suffered an inauspicious start to the tournament, escaping with a 1-0 win over Ireland Rep before falling 3-2 to Nigeria. However, that was followed by a convincing 4-0 win over Olympic gold medallists Canada. Hayley RASO scored Australia’s first two goals. Captain Sam KERR sat out the group phase with a calf injury but is expected to be available for the round of 16.

The Super Falcons followed a goalless draw with Canada with an inspiring victory over the cohosts. Osinachi OHALE and Asisat OSHOALA scored in the second half to establish a 3-1 lead. Alanna KENNEDY scored late for Australia, but Nigeria held on to win. Another 0-0 draw, this with Ireland Rep, confirmed their place in the last sixteen.

Australia return to Sydney/​Gadigal, NSW for their round of 16 match against the second placed team in Group D on MON 07 AUG 2023. Nigeria will face Group D’s first placed team earlier in the day in Brisbane/​Meeanjin, QLD.
