Group E recap
[WED 02 AUG 2023 – 09:34:16 UTC]
The Netherlands and the United States advanced from Group E at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, as Portugal and Vietnam were eliminated.
The Dutch opened their tournament with a 1-0 win over Portugal. Then, in a rematch of the 2019 final, they earned a 1-1 draw with the US, before securing their place in the round of 16 with a 7-0 dismantling of Vietnam, the most lopsided match at the tournament to that point.
For the US, a 3-0 win over Vietnam and the draw with the Netherlands left them needing a point against Portugal. With no one able to find the back of the net, Portugal came close to a shock victory when Ana BORGES struck the post in stoppage time, but the US held on to avoid an early exit.
The Netherlands will face the second placed team from Group G in Sydney/Gadigal, NSW on SUN 06 AUG 2023. Later in the day, the US will meet Group G’s leader in Melbourne/Naarm, VIC.
