[SAT 18 MAR 2023 – 22:47:14 UTC]
CONCACAF have announced their qualifying format for the 2026 Men’s World Cup. Host nations Canada, Mexico, and the United States qualify automatically, leaving 32 teams to compete for three more places at the tournament plus two in the playoffs.
The competition opens with a preliminary round featuring the four lowest ranked teams. The lowest ranked team faces the fourth lowest, and the other two play against one another. Each matchup will be played over two legs, with the aggregate winners advancing.
The two winners join the remaining 28 teams in the first group phase, made up of six groups. Each group contains five teams, with teams playing each opponent once. The top two teams will advance.
In the final round, the twelve teams are placed into three groups of four teams each. Teams play each opponent twice. The first placed team in each group qualifies, and the top two second placed teams advance to the playoffs.
