Nine places claimed in UEFA group phase
[WED 07 SEP 2022 – 04:17:50 UTC]

The UEFA group phase of qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup concluded on TUE 06 SEP 2022. Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden qualified for the final tournament, and nine other teams advanced to the UEFA playoffs.

England secured top spot in Group D with little difficulty, finishing with a perfect 30 points in ten matches, scoring 80 goals while conceding none. Austria edged Northern Ireland to second place.

Despite a 3-2 loss to Serbia – their first away qualifying loss in 24 years – Germany qualified from Group H. Serbia, however, were beaten out to second place by Portugal, who defeated them 2-1 on FRI 02 SEP 2022.

Switzerland entered the final day of Group G two points behind Italy. A 15-0 rout of Moldova, however, was not enough, as the Azzurre edged Romania 2-0 for first place.

Iceland were minutes away from securing their first ever trip to the Women’s World Cup in Group C, but Esmee BRUGTS’s stoppage time goal claimed first place for the Netherlands instead. Regardless, Iceland still have another chance to qualify through the playoffs.

The second placed teams in each group – Austria, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland, Ireland Rep, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, and Wales – advance to the UEFA playoffs, to be played THU 06-TUE 11 OCT 2022. As the three teams with the best records so far, Iceland, Ireland Rep, and Switzerland advance directly to the second round. The playoff draw will be held on FRI 09 SEP 2022.

Of the three winners in the UEFA playoffs, the two highest ranked, including results from the group phase and the second round playoffs, will qualify for Australia/New Zealand 2023. The other winner will have one last chance to qualify through the interconfederation playoffs in FEB 2023 in New Zealand.
