Brazil take Copa América with win over Colombia
[SUN 31 JUL 2022 – 20:54:10 UTC]

Brazil have won the CONMEBOL Women’s Copa América with a 1-0 win over host nation Colombia in the final in Bucaramanga on SAT 30 JUL 2022. It is Brazil’s fourth consecutive continental title and eighth overall.

Both teams won all five of their previous matches, leading to a highly anticipated final. Brazil, however, silenced the capacity crowd of 28,000 with a goal late in the first half. After being fouled in the area by Cafetera defender Manuela VANEGAS, DEBINHA converted the spot kick for her fifth goal of the tournament, one behind Golden Boot winner Yamila RODRÍGUEZ of Argentina. Colombia fought back, but Brazil’s defense held on to win by the solitary goal.

The Canarinhas are now eight time champions of CONMEBOL. Both teams qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympic women’s football tournament. Argentina, as third placed finisher, also qualify for the Women’s World Cup. The fourth and fifth placed teams, Paraguay and Chile, advance to the playoffs in New Zealand in FEB 2023.
