South Africa lift Women’s African Nations Cup
[SUN 24 JUL 2022 – 20:52:56 UTC]

South Africa have won the CAF Women’s African Nations Cup with a 2-1 victory over host nation Morocco in the final on SAT 23 JUL 2022. It is South Africa’s first continental title.

The final featured Morocco, making their first appearance in the Women’s African Nations Cup final, and South Africa, who competed in five previous final matches but lost each time. After a goalless first half, Hildah MAGAIA put Banyana Banyana in front by finishing a pass from Jermaine SEOPOSENWE. Magaia scored her second just eight minutes later, putting away Karabo DHLAMINI’s cross. Rosella AYANE pulled the Atlas Lionesses within one in the 80th minute, but South Africa held on for the victory.

Both teams, along with the other semifinalists Nigeria and Zambia, qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Cameroon and Senegal have advanced to the playoffs, where the last three places at Australia/New Zealand 2023 will be decided.
