CONCACAF W Championship field set as preliminary round concludes
[WED 13 APR 2022 – 05:24:11 UTC]

The CONCACAF preliminary round of qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup concluded on TUE 12 APR 2022. Costa Rica, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, and Trinidad-Tobago finished atop their groups and advance to the CONCACAF W Championship.

Haiti advanced from Group E with little difficulty, scoring a total of 44 goals in four matches and conceding zero. Roselord BORGELLA found net eleven times, tying her with Nicaragua’s Yessenia FLORES as leading goalscorer.

Trinidad-Tobago survived a late scare from Guyana to secure first place in Group F. Needing a win to advance, Guyana took a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute thanks to Sydney CUMMINGS’s second goal of the evening, only to see Lauryn HUTCHINSON equalise in the 90th.

Panama fought off a strident challenge from El Salvador in Group D. When the two teams met on the final day, Yerenis DE LEON and Karla RILEY both scored in the second half to lead the Cañaleras to a 2-0 win.

The CONCACAF W Championship will be played MON 04-MON 18 JUL 2022 in Monterrey, NL, Mexico. Canada and the United States advanced to the tournament automatically. The eight teams will be placed into groups of four at the draw, to be held TUE 19 APR 2022. The top two teams in each group qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and the third placed teams advance to the playoffs.
