India withdraw from Women’s Asian Cup due to positive COVID-19 tests
[SUN 23 JAN 2022 – 19:14:15 UTC]
The AFC have announced that India have been forced to withdraw from the Women’s Asian Cup due to positive COVID-19 tests in their squad. India were unable to field sufficient players for their match against Chinese Taipei on SUN 23 JAN 2022. As a result, India are eliminated from contention for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Per the AFC’s special rules in effect during the COVID-19 pandemic, a team that does not have at least thirteen players, including one goalkeeper, available for a match must withdraw from the competition. Accordingly, India’s previous match in the tournament, a 0-0 draw against Iran on THU 20 JAN 2022, has been annulled, and Group A will be played out with only China PR, Chinese Taipei, and Iran.
