[WED 02 AUG 2023 – 09:44:41 UTC]
England and Denmark advanced as the top two teams in Group D at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. China PR and Haiti were eliminated.
The 2021 European champions started with 1-0 wins over Haiti and Denmark. They claimed top spot in the group with a comprehensive 6-1 win over China PR in the finale. Midfielder Keira WALSH, however, was stretchered off in the Denmark match with a knee injury.
After a 1-0 victory over China PR and the loss to England, the Danes needed a result against Haiti to progress to the round of 16. Though an early goal by Simone BOYE was disallowed for offside, Pernille HARDER scored from the spot later in the first half, and Sanne TROELSGAARD secured the result in second half stoppage time.
England’s round of 16 match will be in Brisbane/Meaanjin, QLD on MON 07 AUG 2023 against Nigeria. Denmark travel back to Sydney/Gadigal, NSW to face Australia later in the day.
