Group A recap
[TUE 01 AUG 2023 – 10:04:49 UTC]
Switzerland and Norway advanced from Group A of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. New Zealand and the Philippines were eliminated.
After a 2-0 win over the Philippines, goalless draws against Norway and New Zealand were sufficient to send the Swiss through to the last sixteen. The cohosts had the opportunity to advance with a victory over Switzerland, but the Football Ferns could not find the back of the net. Jacqui HAND and Olivia CHANCE both struck the woodwork as Switzerland held on to advance.
Norway began with a lacklustre 1-0 loss to New Zealand in the tournament’s opening match. Following the draw with Switzerland, they secured their place in the round of 16 with a 6-0 rout of the Philippines, with Sophie ROMAN HAUG scoring a hat trick.
Switzerland next face the second placed team in Group C in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau on SAT 05 AUG 2023. Later the same day, Norway will face Group C’s top team in Wellington/Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
