US edge France, advance to semifinals
[SAT 29 JUN 2019 – 02:23:17 UTC]

The United States defeated France 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup on FRI 28 JUN 2019. Megan RAPINOE scored both goals for the US, who advance to Lyon to meet England in the semifinals.

Expectations of a tight, cagey affair were overturned just five minutes in, when Rapinoe’s free kick slipped through the area and past the arms of French keeper Sarah BOUHADDI. Midway through the second half, Rapinoe finished off a square ball from Alex MORGAN to double the US’s advantage.

The home faithful in Paris were given hope by Wendie RENARD’s header off a free kick in the 81st minute, but the US held firm and saw out the remainder of the match.

The result maintains the US’s streak of a semifinal appearance in all eight Women’s World Cups to date. They face England on Tuesday with a place in the final up for grabs.
