England cruise to 3-0 quarterfinal win over Norway
[FRI 28 JUN 2019 – 01:01:44 UTC]
England have defeated Norway 3-0 in the first quarterfinal of the 2019 Women’s World Cup. They will face the France-United States winner in the semifinals on Tuesday.
Jill SCOTT opened the scoring in the third minute, when she finished off a cross into the area by Lucy BRONZE. Ellen WHITE added England’s second shortly before halftime, and Bronze’s strike from outside the area in the 57th completed the scoring.
The Three Lionesses had an opportunity to add another late on when Steph HOUGHTON was fouled by Maria THORISDOTTIR, but Ingrid HJELMSETH saved Nikita PARRIS’s penalty.
The victory places England in the semifinals for the second consecutive Women’s World Cup. Norway’s hopes of a second title have come to an end, but the quarterfinal appearance still marks their best performance since a fourth place finish in 2007.
