Nigeria defeat South Africa on penalties in CAF final
[SAT 01 DEC 2018 – 21:16:29 UTC]

Nigeria have won the CAF Women’s African Nations Cup 4-3 on penalties after the final ended goalless after 120 minutes. It is Nigeria’s ninth African title.

The Super Falcons had the better of play in regulation time, with two good scoring opportunities in quick succession midway through the first half. Asisat OSHOALA’s shot was just wide, and moments later, Ngozi OKOBI forced a save from South Africa keeper Kaylin SWART. In the second half, Swart was whistled for a foul on Francisca ORDEGA, but Oshoala’s spot kick was placed wide.

In the penalty shootout, each side missed one early attempt, and with the scores level at 3-3 after four rounds, Chinaza Love UCHENDU scored for Nigeria, but Linda MOTLHALO’s effort was saved by Tochukwu OLUEHI, touching off celebrations amongst the Super Falcons.

Both teams, along with Cameroon, will represent CAF at the Women’s World Cup, Banyana Banyana having qualified for the first time. The draw for the final tournament will be held on SAT 08 DEC 2018.
