[SAT 01 DEC 2018 – 20:35:00 UTC]
New Zealand have defeated Fiji 8-0 in the final of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, earning them the 24th and final place at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
As with most of their previous matches at the tournament, the Football Ferns opened with a strong attack, taking the lead through Rosie WHITE in the second minute. By halftime, New Zealand were up 4-0 on the scoresheet and up a player, as Fiji’s Cema NASAU was sent off for a second yellow card in the 40th minute. White finished the evening with a brace, as did Betsy HASSETT and Sarah GREGORIUS.
In the third place match played earlier in the day, Papua New Guinea defeated host nation New Caledonia 7-1. Meagen GUNEMBA scored four goals to take her tournament tally to eight, earning her a share of the Golden Boot with Gregorius.
New Zealand qualify for their fourth consecutive Women’s World Cup and fifth overall. The draw for the final tournament will be held on SAT 08 DEC 2018.
