[SAT 01 DEC 2018 – 02:08:52 UTC]
Cameroon have defeated Mali 4-2 in the third place match of the CAF Women’s African Nations Cup. The result earns the Indomitable Lionesses a place at their second Women’s World Cup.
After falling to Nigeria on penalties in the semifinals, Cameroon opened brightly at the third place match in Cape Coast, Ghana. They were 2-0 in front after 40 minutes, both goals coming from Abena NINON. Fatoumata DIARRA pulled one back for Mali just before the interval, and an own goal in the 57th minute levelled the match at 2-2. But moments later, Gabrielle ABOUDI ONGUENE’s strike restored Cameroon’s advantage, and Christine MANIE scored from distance in stoppage time to seal the result.
Cameroon join Nigeria and South Africa as Africa’s representatives in France, with Mali falling short of their first ever qualification. Nigeria meet South Africa on Saturday for the African title.
