Host nations’ groups confirmed
[MON 17 JUN 2024 – 13:15:14 UTC]
FIFA have confirmed the group assignments for the host nations of the 2026 Men’s World Cup. Mexico will play in Group A, Canada in Group B, and the United States in Group D. Group assignments for the remaining matches have also been released.
The group assignments confirm earlier announcements that the groups are largely regionalised. For instance, all Group A matches save for one will be played in Mexico. Groups C, E, I, and L are largely on the east coast of the United States and Canada, whilst Groups B, D, and G remain primarily on the west coast.
The elimination phase matches were also included in the announcement. Should they finish first in Group A, Mexico would remain in México, CDMX for their round of 32 and round of 16 matches. Similarly, Canada’s first two elimination matches would be in Vancouver, BC if they top Group B. If they finish first in Group D, the United States would travel from the Los Angeles, CA area to the San Francisco, CA area for the round of 32, and then to Seattle, WA for the round of 16.
Unlike previous tournament schedule releases, the schedule announced so far does not have placeholders for teams in the group phase. FIFA will confirm specific match venues after next year’s draw.
