Vietnam qualify for first time; China PR win Women’s Asian Cup
[SUN 06 FEB 2022 – 18:42:25 UTC]

Vietnam have qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Chinese Taipei in the repechage playoffs at the Women’s Asian Cup on SUN 06 FEB 2022. Later in the day, China PR defeated Korea Rep 3-2 in the final match.

In the last match of the repechage playoffs, Chinese Taipei needed only a draw to qualify for their second ever Women’s World Cup. But in the second half, just minutes after SU Hy-Ysuan levelled the encounter at 1-1, Vietnam’s NGUYEN Thi Bich Thuy scored the decisive goal. The result sends Vietnam to the Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history.

In the final, Korea Rep had their sights set on a first ever Women’s Asian Cup title after taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. But two goals for China PR in a four minute span midway through the second half levelled the encounter, and XIAO Yuyi’s stoppage time goal secured the Steel Roses’ ninth Asian title.

Along with cohosts Australia, the AFC will have at least five representatives at the Women’s World Cup: China PR, Japan, Korea Rep, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Chinese Taipei and Thailand will have another chance in the playoffs.
