Spain win first championship with 1-0 win over England
[SUN 20 AUG 2023 – 17:56:03 UTC]

Spain have won the 2023 Women’s World Cup after defeating England 1-0 in the final played on SUN 20 AUG 2023 in Sydney/Gadigal, NSW. It is Spain’s first title.

The current European champions, England were favoured and started brightly, with Lauren HEMP striking the crossbar early on. But just before the half hour mark, la Roja started off a counterattack, as Mariona CALDENTEY found captain Olga CARMONA making an overlapping run down the left flank. Carmona took the ball into the area and fired past Three Lionesses keeper Mary EARPS. Spain had opportunities to add to their lead. Salma PARALLUELO hit the post late in the first half, and Earps saved a penalty by Jennifer HERMOSO in the 69th minute. England, though, were unable to manage an equaliser.

Spain lifted the trophy for the first time in only their third appearance at the Women’s World Cup. England still register their best performance yet, following a third place finish in 2015 and fourth place in 2019.
