Sweden won the third place match at the 2023 Women’s World Cup on SAT 19 AUG 2023, defeating cohost Australia 2-0 in Brisbane/​Meaanjin, QLD.

With both sides playing the same starting eleven as in the semifinals, the match began with a high tempo, as Sweden enjoyed the majority of possession early. Their dominance paid off in the 28th minute, when Clare HUNT was found to have tripped Stina BLACKSTENIUS on video review. Fridolina ROLFÖ scored the resulting penalty. Kosovare ASLLANI added the Swedes’ second on a counterattack early in the second half.

Sweden have now finished in the top three in five of the nine Women’s World Cups played to date. The Matildas’ fourth place finish is still their best ever, having never previously advanced beyond the quarterfinals.
