The United States have won the 2019 Women’s World Cup with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands on SUN 07 JUL 2019 in Lyon. Megan RAPINOE and Rose LAVELLE scored in the second half as they led the US to their fourth championship.
Strong defending by the Oranje kept the match goalless through the first half, the longest the US have been kept off the scoresheet in this tournament. Sari VAN VEENENDAAL, demonstrating the form that earned her recognition as the best goalkeeper of the tournament, made four saves in the first half.
The match began to turn in the US’s favour in the 61st minute, when they were awarded a penalty following a video review. Stefanie VAN DER GRAGT was adjudged to have taken down Alex MORGAN in the area with a high boot, and Rapinoe placed the spot kick out of van Veenendaal’s reach.
Not long afterward, Lavelle extended the US’s lead on a long run from near the centre circle that split the Dutch defense. Lavelle’s shot from the top of the area beat van Veenendaal to the far post.
The US won all seven matches at the tournament, and dating back to 2015, they have now won twelve consecutive Women’s World Cup matches, a record for men and women. They complete the tournament with 26 goals scored, a new Women’s World Cup record.
