Sweden have claimed third place at the 2019 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 win over England in Nice on SAT 06 JUL 2019. Kosovare ASLLANI and Sofia JAKOBSSON were Sweden’s goalscorers.

Asllani gave the Blågult the lead in the eleventh minute following a defensive giveaway by England, and in the 22nd, a strong finish from Jakobsson extended their lead. Eight minutes later, England closed the gap through Fran KIRBY’s effort that bounded in off the post.

The Three Lionesses continued to press forward and nearly levelled the scoreline shortly thereafter, but Ellen WHITE’s goal was disallowed for offside following a video review. England kept up the pressure after the interval. Sweden, however, were up to the task, as a late strike by Lucy BRONZE was headed off the line by Nilla FISCHER.

Both teams end up one place shy of their best ever Women’s World Cup finishes. England finished in third place in 2015, and Sweden were second in 2003.
