• Germany 03-00 Nigeria: Germany went in front after twenty minutes on a header by Alexandra POPP. Four minutes later, Evelyn NWABUOKU’s boot came down into the knee of Lina MAGULL. Referee Yoshimi YAMASHITA initially took no action, but following a video review, she awarded a penalty to Germany and showed a yellow card to Nwabuoku. Sara DÄBRITZ converted the penalty. A second half goal by Lea SCHÜLLER made sure of Germany’s quarterfinal matchup with the winner of the Sweden-Canada match.
• Norway 01-01 Australia [F/OT; pen: 04-01]: Isabell HERLOVSEN’s goal in the 31st minute gave Norway the early advantage. In the 41st, referee Riem HUSSEIN initially awarded the Matildas a penalty, but following a video review, she concluded that the ball struck the shoulder, and not the arm, of Maria THORISDOTTIR. Australia, though, equalised in the 83rd minute when Elise KELLOND-KNIGHT’s corner bounded through the area and directly into the goal. Late in the first extra time session, Alanna KENNEDY brought down Lisa-Marie UTLAND, drawing a direct red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Norway, however, were unable to make their advantage count. The match went to penalties, where Sam KERR missed wide, and goalkeeper Ingrid HJELMSETH saved Emily GIELNIK’s attempt. Norway survive to meet the winner of tomorrow’s England-Cameroon match.
