Day 14 recap
[FRI 21 JUN 2019 – 03:44:35 UTC]
The group phase of the 2019 Women’s World Cup concluded on THU 20 JUN 2019 with two dramatic finishes.
- Netherlands 02-01 Canada: Both teams were already assured of a place in the last sixteen, but the match opened in dramatic fashion. Desiree VAN LUNTEREN brought Canada’s Janine BECKIE down in the second minute. A penalty was originally awarded, but following a video review, the referee concluded that the foul occurred outside the area. The resulting free kick was blocked. The Oranje went on to win on goals by Anouk DEKKER and Lineth BEERENSTEYN, taking first place in Group E and earning a round of 16 match against Japan. Christine SINCLAIR scored the lone goal for Canada.
- Cameroon 02-01 New Zealand: The Indomitable Lionesses entered the match needing to win, and score at least two goals, in order to advance. After a goalless first half, they were on their way as Ajara NCHOUT found net in the 57th minute. In the 80th, though, an own goal levelled the scores, and as time wound down, both teams pressed forward frantically. Deep into stoppage time, Nchout beat the Ferns’ goalkeeper Erin NAYLER again, sparking celebrations throughout Cameroon. The Indomitable Lionesses advance out of the group phase for the second consecutive tournament and will face England.
- United States 02-00 Sweden: Lindsey HORAN scored off a third minute corner, and an own goal early in the second half secured top spot in Group F for the US. They take on Spain in the round of 16, and Sweden will meet Canada.
- Chile 02-00 Thailand: One more place in the last sixteen was up for grabs, and Chile needed to win by three goals to pip Nigeria. An own goal put la Roja in front early in the second half, and María URRUTIA added a second in the 80th minute. Two minutes later, Urrutia went down in the area after contact with Thai keeper Waraporn BOONSING, for which a penalty was later awarded via video review. Francisca LARA’s spot kick, however, struck the bar, and Chile were forced to exit the tournament. Nigeria survive and will meet Germany, making this the first Women’s World Cup in which two CAF teams advanced to the elimination phase.
