France cruise to victory in Women’s World Cup opener
[SAT 08 JUN 2019 – 01:53:02 UTC]

France defeated Korea Rep 4-0 in the opening match of the 2019 Women’s World Cup in Paris. Wendie RENARD scored twice, both on set piece headers.

A sellout crowd of 45,261 at the Parc des Princes was treated to a dream start, as Eugénie LE SOMMER opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Griedge MBOCK BATHY added a second in the 30th, but in the first use of video assistant referee at a Women’s World Cup, the goal was disallowed as Mbock Bathy was ruled to have been offside by a matter of inches.

There could be no doubt, however, on Renard’s two goals, both coming in the first half as she headed in corner kicks from each flag.

The Koreans struggled to get into the match, failing to manage a single shot attempt in the first half. LEE Min A’s breakaway fourteen minutes from time was Korea Rep’s best look on goal, but she turned her shot wide of the post.

Les Bleues captain Amandine HENRY completed the scoring with an excellent strike to the far post in the 85th minute. France’s next match in Group A is against Norway, and Korea Rep face Nigeria. Both matches are on Wednesday.
