CONCACAF Women’s Championship draw renews US-Mexico rivalry
[WED 05 SEP 2018 – 04:36:47 UTC]
Held on TUE 04 SEP 2018, the draw for the CONCACAF Women’s Championship set out the road to the Women’s World Cup. Title holders the United States must open against Mexico, whilst the confederation’s other power, Canada, face Jamaica.
Group A, to be played in Cary, NC, USA, features the US, Mexico, Trinidad-Tobago, and Panama. The US have won the Women’s World Cup three times, and Mexico are looking to qualify for the third consecutive time. Both T-T and Panama will be eager to qualify for the first time.
Group B, in Edinburg, TX, USA, includes Canada, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Cuba. Canada have taken part in six consecutive Women’s World Cups, and the Ticas made their first appearance in 2015. Jamaica and Cuba will have eyes on matching that feat.
The tournament opens on THU 04 OCT 2018, and after the group phase is complete, the action will shift to Frisco, TX, USA for the elimination phase. Of the four semifinalists, all qualify automatically except the loser of the third place match, who will have a second chance in the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff against Argentina.
