Norway, Netherlands together again in UEFA group phase draw
[WED 26 APR 2017 – 04:28:29 UTC]
The draw for the UEFA group phase was conducted in Nyon, Switzerland on TUE 25 APR 2017, allocating the 35 teams into seven groups. Eight teams will qualify for the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
No doubt the most attention will fall on Group 3, featuring Norway and the Netherlands. The two teams are in the same qualifying group for the third consecutive Women’s World Cup, and they will also square off in Women’s Euro 2017 this summer. Ireland Rep and Northern Ireland, as well as Slovakia, make up the rest of the group.
Other highlights include three Women’s Euro 2017 participants – Italy, Belgium, and Portugal – in Group 6, a Scandinavian derby between Sweden and Denmark in Group 4, and a British derby between England and Wales in Group 1.
The group phase begins in SEP 2017. The top team in each group qualifies for France 2019, and the top four second placed teams compete in two rounds of playoffs to decide one more place at the final tournament.
