Spain have won the 2026 Men’s World Cup with a 1-0 win over Argentina in extra time in the final match, played on SUN 19 JUL 2026 in East Rutherford, NJ, United States. Ferran TORRES scored the winning goal in the 106th minute.

Argentina started positively, with Lionel MESSI finding himself 1v1 against Spain goalkeeper Unai SIMÓN five minutes in. Simón, however, came well out of his area to clear away the danger. That would prove to be an anomaly, as la Furia Roja dominated possession and held all attacking momentum. Emiliano MARTÍNEZ made ten saves in normal time, whilst Simón was not troubled by a single shot from the Albiceleste, on target or otherwise.

In the last ten minutes of normal time, Enzo FERNÁNDEZ was shown the yellow card twice, first for dissent and then for a reckless challenge on Pau CUBARSÍ. With their opponents reduced to ten players for the duration of extra time, Spain continued to press. They believed they had their breakthrough in the first extra time period, but Nico WILLIAMS’s goal was disallowed for a foul by Mikel MERINO.

Less than a minute after the kickoff to start the second extra time period, Spain finally did break the deadlock. Williams headed a cross back to Torres, who powered home over Martínez’s outstretched arms. Torres beat Martínez again several minutes later, only to have it called offside by a hair. The Albiceleste finally managed two shots late on, but the Spanish defense dealt with the pressure until the final whistle.

Spain lifted the trophy for the second time, to join their first title in 2010. They are now the first nation to hold both the Men’s and Women’s World Cups simultaneously, having won the women’s title in 2023.
