France and Australia advanced from Group D of the 2022 Men’s World Cup, as Tunisia and Denmark were eliminated.

2018 champions France opened their campaign with a 4-1 win over Australia. After falling behind to a Craig GOODWIN goal in the ninth minute, les Bleus responded with four, including a brace from Olivier GIROUD. He is now tied with Thierry HENRY as France’s all time leader with 51 goals each. France then defeated Denmark 2-1 to secure their place in the last sixteen, before a heavily rotated squad fell to Tunisia 1-0.

The Socceroos recovered from their loss to France with 1-0 wins over Tunisia and Denmark. Matthew LECKIE scored the decisive goal against Denmark that secured Australia’s place in the round of 16. The Socceroos finished level with les Bleus on six points, though France took first place on goal difference.

France await the second placed team in Group C in the round of 16. Australia will face the top team in that group.
