But relentless pressure by the Azzurre paid off with Barbara BONANSEA’s equaliser early in the second half. Bonansea then headed home the winner in stoppage time.
• Brazil 03-00 Jamaica: A hat trick by CRISTIANE gave Brazil a winning start in Group C, but Reggae Girl keeper Sydney SCHNEIDER’s three saves, including one from the penalty spot, kept the scoreline in check. Brazil’s next match is against the Matildas on Thursday, and Jamaica face Italy on Friday.
• England 02-01 Scotland: Nikita PARRIS gave England the lead on a fourteenth minute penalty, with Ellen WHITE adding a second late in the first half. With eleven minutes to play, Claire EMSLIE recorded Scotland’s first Women’s World Cup goal, but the Three Lionesses held on for the victory. Scotland’s next match in Group D is against Japan on Friday, with England-Argentina coming later in the day.
