Canada, United States qualify with comfortable semifinal wins
[MON 15 OCT 2018 – 03:42:48 UTC]
Canada and the United States have qualified for the 2019 Women’s World Cup with their wins in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship. Canada defeated Panama 7-0, and the US were 6-0 winners over Jamaica.
The Cañaleras, who eliminated Mexico in Group A, kept Canada off the scoresheet until late in the first half, when Christine SINCLAIR headed in a cross from Janine BECKIE. A header by Jessie FLEMING and another header from Sinclair had Canada 3-0 up by the 49th minute. Beckie and Rebecca QUINN also scored before Adriana LEON added two more goals late on, securing Canada’s seventh trip to the Women’s World Cup.
In the second semifinal, the US took control early, as Tobin HEATH opened the scoring in the second minute. Megan RAPINOE added a second in the 15th off a brilliant long ball from Abby DAHLKEMPER. The US were ahead 5-0 by halftime as Julie ERTZ, Heath again, and Alex MORGAN found net. A penalty from Morgan late in the second half completed the scoring, as the Americans uphold their record of qualifying for every Women’s World Cup.
Canada and the US meet on Wednesday for the CONCACAF title, following the third place match between Panama and Jamaica. The winner of that match qualifies for their first Women’s World Cup, and the losing team has another chance in the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff against Argentina next month.
