Day 7 recap
[SAT 13 JUN 2015 – 05:26:51 UTC]

Four goals per match were scored at the Women’s World Cup on FRI 12 JUN 2015. Pity they weren’t more evenly distributed.

  • Australia 02-00 Nigeria: A brace from Kyah SIMON put the Matildas back in the running in Group D. The highlight was Lisa DE VANNA’s superb run through the Nigerian defense to create the first goal.
  • Switzerland 10-01 Ecuador: Angie PONCE stepped to the penalty spot for Ecuador’s first ever Women’s World Cup goal. It was scant consolation, though, as the Swiss ran roughshod with 75% possession and two players – Fabienne HUMM and Ramona BACHMANN – scoring hat tricks. Ponce also scored a hat trick, though the other two were own goals. Switzerland thus jump into second place in Group C.
  • United States 00-00 Sweden: A draw was a fair result in this encounter, in which both sides risked very little. Abby WAMBACH entered in the second half and soon thereafter had the US’s best opportunity, a diving header palmed over the bar by Hedvig LINDAHL. That was soon followed by the Swedes’ best look on goal, a Caroline SEGER shot headed off the line by Meghan KLINGENBERG. Sweden now have it all to do, with only two points in Group D and a match against Australia upcoming.
  • Japan 02-01 Cameroon: Ajara NCHOUT scored for Cameroon in the 90th minute to set up a dramatic finish, but the first half goals by Aya SAMESHIMA and Yuika SUGASAWA were too much to overcome. The Nadeshiko secure their place in the last sixteen, while Cameroon and Switzerland will likely both get through from Group C if they draw on Tuesday.
