Day 6 recap
[FRI 12 JUN 2015 – 04:07:29 UTC]

The matches of THU 11 JUN 2015 did little to clear up the picture at the Women’s World Cup.

  • Germany 01-01 Norway: Anja MITTAG put the German squad up after six minutes by following up on a rebounded save from opposing goalkeeper Ingrid HJELMSETH. But the Norwegians pressed forward in the second half and had their equaliser on a free kick by Maren MJELDE. The two teams are now level atop Group B, but Germany have the advantage on goal difference.
  • China PR 01-00 Netherlands: With 60% possession and 27 shot attempts to 8, China PR dominated proceedings, but none of those shots actually found net until second half stoppage time. TAN Ruyin lobbed in a long pass from midfield, finding WANG Lisi to finish at the far post. The result put China PR back into the thick of things in Group A.
  • Côte d’Ivoire 02-03 Thailand: This may not have been the headline making match, but this Group B meeting of the elephants saw both sides score their first Women’s World Cup goals. Ange N’GUESSAN scored the Ivoirians’ first after four minutes, and Orathai SRIMANEE registered the first two for Thailand later in the first half. The Thai lead was then extended by Thanatta CHAWONG in the 75th minute, and Josée NAHI pulled one back for Côte d’Ivoire in the 88th. But despite a late surge, the Ivoirians simply squandered too many opportunities, including three shots off the woodwork.
  • Canada 00-00 New Zealand: Just four minutes after kicking off, this match was interrupted by lightning strikes in Edmonton. It resumed after a half hour stoppage, but nobody could make their way onto the scoresheet. The Football Ferns earned a penalty from a first half foul by Allysha CHAPMAN, but Amber HEARN sent the spot kick off the bar. Christine SINCLAIR had the best scoring opportunity for Canada in the second half, only to send it just wide of the post from twelve yards out. The result leaves Canada leading Group A, but not yet sure of their place in the last sixteen.
