Colombia qualify, Ecuador to playoff
[TUE 30 SEP 2014 – 05:05:55 UTC]

Colombia have qualified for the Women’s World Cup, and Ecuador have advanced to the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff, after Ecuador defeated Argentina 3-2 in the final round of the Women’s Copa América.

Leading by a point going into the final day of the tournament, Argentina needed only a draw to secure a playoff place. 30 minutes into the match, though, they were ahead 2-0 and on their way toward a win that could have earned them direct qualification. However, the host nation responded through Carina CAICEDO just six minutes later. Two more goals in the second half earned Ecuador third place in the final round, and it assured Colombia of CONMEBOL’s second ticket to Canada.

In the day’s other match, Colombia played to a goalless draw with Brazil, who claimed their sixth CONMEBOL title. Ecuador will now seek their first Women’s World Cup appearance when they face the fourth placed side at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship.
