FIFA, UEFA suspend Russia over Ukraine invasion

FIFA and UEFA have announced that Russia have been suspended from all international competitions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia were due to play Poland in the UEFA playoffs on THU 24 MAR 2022.

In a joint statement, FIFA and UEFA confirmed that Russian national teams and clubs are suspended from participation in all competitions “until further notice”. UEFA had previously decided to relocate the 2022 Men’s Champions League final from St Petersburg, Russia to Saint-Denis, France.

The impact on the 2022 Men’s World Cup qualifiers is yet to be confirmed. Russia were scheduled to host Poland in the playoff semifinals in Moscow. The winner of that match would advance to final B against the winner of the semifinal involving Sweden and the Czech Rep. Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Rep had previously announced their refusal to play against Russia.
