CONCACAF draw procedure confirmed
[FRI 14 AUG 2020 – 03:34:09 UTC]
FIFA have announced the pots and procedures for the draw for CONCACAF’s 2022 Men’s World Cup qualifiers. The draw is to be held at 17:00 UTC on WED 19 AUG 2020 in Zürich, Switzerland.
The draw for the first round will allocate the 30 teams to six groups. The top seeds have already been allocated to groups: El Salvador to Group A, Canada to Group B, Curaçao to Group C, Panama to Group D, Haiti to Group E, and Trinidad-Tobago to Group F. One team from each of the remaining four pots will be added to each group.
The teams in each group will play one another once. The first placed teams then advance to the second round, where they will meet one another over two legs. No draw for this round is required, as the pairings have already been decided: 1st Group A-1st Group F, 1st Group B-1st Group E, and 1st Group C-1st Group D.
The three second round winners will move on to the final round, where they will be joined by CONCACAF’s top five teams in the FIFA rankings: Mexico, United States, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Honduras. The teams will play one another twice, with the top three teams qualifying for Qatar 2022, and the fourth placed team advancing to the playoffs. For this round, the draw will simply determine the order of matches.
