[THU 14 JUN 2018 – 17:21:10 UTC]
The 2018 Men’s World Cup has opened, and Russia have put on a show for their home supporters, defeating Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the first match in Group A. Denis CHERYSHEV scored two goals after entering in the first half.
The spectators at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium were treated to the tournament’s first goal after only twelve minutes, as Iury GAZINSKY headed home a cross just past the outstretched hand of Saudi keeper Abdullah AL-MUAIOUF. Shortly thereafter, Russia midfielder Alan DZAGOEV was forced off due to an apparent hamstring injury, replaced by Cheryshev, who scored his first of the evening shortly before halftime.
Saudi Arabia started the second half on the attack, but were unable to threaten Igor AKINFEEV’s goal. Russia would respond with a header by Artem DZYUBA in the 71st minute to make it 3-0. Cheryshev and Aleksandr GOLOVIN would add strikes from distance in stoppage time.
Russia resume play on TUE 19 JUN 2018 against Egypt, with Saudi Arabia facing another stern challenge against Uruguay one day later.
