Late theatrics were the order of the day at the 2018 Men’s World Cup on FRI 15 JUN 2018.

• Egypt 00-01 Uruguay: With Mohamed SALAH still held out of the Egypt lineup due to his shoulder injury, the Pharaohs depended upon goalkeeper Mohamed EL-SHENAWY to keep them in the match, making several crucial saves. But in the 89th minute, Uruguay finally broke through as José GIMÉNEZ headed in a free kick. The Celeste jump to second place in Group A, behind Russia on goal difference.
• Morocco 00-01 Iran: Just days after missing out on the opportunity to host the 2026 tournament, Morocco suffered another heartbreak in Group B. Despite enjoying the majority of possession and of the attacking opportunities, the Atlas Lions could not capitalise, and deep into stoppage time, Iran were awarded a free kick. Morocco’s Aziz BOUHADDOUZ headed the ball, only to watch it sail into his own net. Iran take the three points, winning a Men’s World Cup match for the first time since 1998.
• Portugal 03-03 Spain: The most anticpated match of the group phase lived up to the billing, as Portugal’s CRISTIANO RONALDO scored twice in the first half. Spain would reverse the 2-1 halftime deficit with two goals in quick succession, a tap-in from Diego COSTA in the 55th minute and a strike by NACHO from outside the area in the 58th. But two minutes from time, Ronaldo completed his hat trick – making him, at 33, the oldest ever to complete the feat in a Men’s World Cup match – with a free kick that curled past Spanish keeper David DE GEA. The result leaves Iran top of Group B heading into Wednesday’s matches: Portugal-Morocco and Iran-Spain.
