Russia 2018 draw sets up Iberian derby

The draw for the 2018 Men’s World Cup was held on FRI 01 DEC 2017 in Moscow, Russia, and a number of tantalising matches are on offer in the group phase.

The tournament opens on THU 14 JUN 2018 when host nation Russia meet Saudi Arabia in Moscow in Group A. The next day, the Group B match between reigning European champion Portugal and 2010 Men’s World Cup champion Spain will no doubt capture the world’s attention. On the same day, Egypt return to the Men’s World Cup for the first time in 28 years when they face Uruguay.

The group likely to be considered the Group of Death, Group F features title holder Germany opening against Mexico on SUN 17 JUN 2018, with Sweden and Korea Rep also eager to make an impact. Costa Rica, who made a shock run to the quarterfinals in 2014, are in Group E alongside Brazil, Switzerland, and Serbia.

Two teams will take part in the Men’s World Cup for the first time: Iceland, who meet Argentina in Group D on SAT 16 JUN 2018, and Panama, whose debut match is against Belgium in Group G on MON 18 JUN 2018.

The group phase wraps up on THU 28 JUN 2018, when the top two teams in each group advance to the round of 16. The elimination matches then proceed until SUN 15 JUL 2018, when the surviving two teams take part in the final in Moscow.
