Russia 2018 field, pots set
[THU 16 NOV 2017 – 05:51:57 UTC]
The 871 matches of the qualifiers have all been played, and the 32 teams to take part in the 2018 Men’s World Cup have been identified. Owing to a recent FIFA decision, all four pots will be seeded when the draw assigns the teams to groups on FRI 01 DEC 2017.
Host nation Russia have been placed into pot 1 automatically, along with the top seven teams in the FIFA rankings for OCT 2017. Title holders Germany are ranked first, followed by Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, and France.
At recent Men’s World Cups, the remaining pots would have divided the teams by confederation. This time, however, FIFA have decided to use the ranking table for all of the remaining pots. Accordingly, the second pot features the world’s eighth ranked team, Spain, and the last team to qualify, tenth ranked Peru.
Despite the change in seeding, teams in the same confederation still cannot be drawn into the same group, save for UEFA teams. Since UEFA have fourteen representatives at the tournament, including Russia, there will be six groups with two UEFA teams.
The draw for the final tournament will begin at 15:00 UTC on FRI 01 DEC 2017 in Moscow, Russia.
- Pot 1: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Russia
- Pot 2: Colombia, Croatia, England, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay
- Pot 3: Costa Rica, Denmark, Egypt, Iceland, Iran, Senegal, Sweden, Tunisia
- Pot 4: Australia, Japan, Korea Rep, Morocco, Nigeria, Panama, Saudi Arabia, Serbia
