Netherlands claim third from besieged hosts
[SUN 13 JUL 2014 – 07:40:01 UTC]

The Netherlands have come away with third place at the 2014 Men’s World Cup with a 3-0 win over Brazil in the capital city of Brasília, DF. The host side have now conceded ten goals in two matches.

The Brazilian squad’s hopes of placing their debacle of a semifinal, a 7-1 loss to Germany, behind them were dashed just two minutes in. Captain THIAGO SILVA, just returning from suspension, dragged down Dutch attacker Arjen ROBBEN. Referee Djamel HAIMOUDI immediately responded by pointing to the spot, and Robin VAN PERSIE made no mistake on the penalty.

Daley BLIND added a second goal later in the half, and Georginio WIJNALDUM completed the scoring in second half stoppage time, securing third place for the team that was eliminated by Argentina on penalties.

The result ends a tournament that may well have Brazilians vowing never to host the Men’s World Cup again. The Dutch, however, will be pleased at a third place finish that was well beyond the youthful team’s expectations.
