Argentina will face Germany in the final of the 2014 Men’s World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties in the second semifinal in São Paulo, SP. The match ended goalless after 120 minutes.

After the astonishing 7-1 German rout of Brazil in the other semifinal, this match seemed downright ordinary. Neither side was able to offer much in the way of attack. The Oranje managed a single shot on target, in the 98th minute. Argentina’s Lionel MESSI, normally so dangerous in the final third, never had a touch of the ball in the area.

Unlike the quarterfinal against Costa Rica, Netherlands coach Louis VAN GAAL kept goalkeeper Jasper CILLESSEN in for the shootout. Cillessen, however, could not save any Albiceleste penalties; despite a touch on Maxi RODRÍGUEZ’s final attempt, it still bounded in below the crossbar. Conversely, Argentine keeper Sergio ROMERO saved from Ron VLAAR and Wesley SNEIJDER to send Argentina through.

The Netherlands will face Brazil in the third place match in Brasília, DF. The Germany-Argentina final, a rematch of the final matches of the 1986 and 1990 tournaments, will be held at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, RJ.
