Germany dismantle hosts, storm into final
[WED 09 JUL 2014 – 06:20:07 UTC]

Germany have advanced to the final of the 2014 Men’s World Cup with a record breaking 7-1 semifinal victory over host nation Brazil in Belo Horizonte, MG.

The assault on JÚLIO CÉSAR’s goal began early, as Thomas MÜLLER put Germany ahead in the 11th minute. Later in the first half, a span six minutes long saw four more goals, including the 16th of Miroslav KLOSE’s prolific Men’s World Cup career. He surpasses the previous record of 15 by retired Brazilian star RONALDO, who was in attendance as a commentator.

The Brazilian attack was hindered by the absence of injured star NEYMAR, but THIAGO SILVA’s suspension will have made more of an impact. With their normal captain out, Brazil’s back four were in total disarray throughout.

The six goal loss equals Brazil’s worst ever, a 6-0 defeat to Uruguay 94 years ago. It is also the most lopsided semifinal in Men’s World Cup history.

Germany, led by two goals each from Toni KROOS and André SCHÜRRLE, reach their eighth Men’s World Cup final, more than any other nation. They now travel to Rio de Janeiro, RJ, to face the winner of the Netherlands-Argentina match.
