• Sweden 03-03 Nigeria: Nigeria went into the halftime interval trailing 2-0, but two goals in quick succession early in the second half turned the match on its end. Linda SEMBRANT put the Swedes back in front shortly thereafter. However, the Super Falcons’ speed threatened throughout the day and eventually levelled again, as Ngozi OKOBI found Francisca ORDEGA on a breakaway in the 87th minute. Nigeria earn a valuable point in Group D.
• Cameroon 06-00 Ecuador: A hat trick by Gaëlle ENGANAMOUIT led Cameroon to the top of Group C in a meeting of two sides playing their first ever Women’s World Cup match. The young Ecuadorean squad conceded three penalties and had captain Ligia MOREIRA sent off.
• United States 03-01 Australia: Lisa DE VANNA scored a first half equaliser for the Matildas, but the US fought back after the interval and took the early lead in Group D, with a goal from Christen PRESS and a second from Megan RAPINOE.
• Japan 01-00 Switzerland: A collision between Japan’s Kozue ANDO and Swiss keeper Gaëlle THALMANN was ruled a penalty by referee Lucile VENEGAS. Aya MIYAMA’s spot kick was successful, and Japan took the three points in Group C despite a nervy finish that saw Lara DICKENMANN miss over the bar in stoppage time.
