Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador into CONMEBOL final round
[SUN 21 SEP 2014 – 19:44:08 UTC]
The first group phase of the Women’s Copa América has completed, with Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador advancing into the final round. CONMEBOL’s two and one half places at the 2015 Women’s World Cup will be decided over the coming week in Quito.
In Group A, Colombia won all four matches, and despite Ecuador’s 2-1 loss to Uruguay on the last day, the host nation advanced on goal difference.
Group B proved to be a difficult fight involving Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. Going into the last matchday, Argentina and Chile were tied for second place, but Chile fell to Paraguay, and Argentina defeated Brazil.
The four surviving teams will now play one another once, and the top two teams qualify for Canada 2015. The third placed team advances to the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff.
