Diego Maradona: 1960-2020
[FRI 27 NOV 2020 – 19:04:24 UTC]
Diego MARADONA, one of the greatest players in the history of world football, died on WED 25 NOV 2020 at the age of 60 following a heart attack. Maradona led Argentina to the 1986 Men’s World Cup title.
Maradona represented Argentina in four Men’s World Cups, starting in 1982. His performance in 1986 is best remembered, when he was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, and the Silver Boot as the second highest goalscorer.
He scored the two most iconic goals of his career in the quarterfinal against England, starting with the infamous “Hand of God” goal on a handball missed by the referee. Four minutes later, Maradona received the ball in his own half and singlehandedly took the ball down the pitch, beating five tackles, before finishing past goalkeeper Peter SHILTON. This goal was eventually voted the Goal of the Century by FIFA.
Following his retirement as a player in 1997, he moved on to a managerial career, coaching Argentina at the 2010 Men’s World Cup.
Maradona has regularly been ranked one of the top two players in history, alongside Brazil’s PELÉ. Matches around the world have observed a minute’s silence before kickoff in his honour.
