Thomas MEUNIER, returning from a suspension served during the Red Devils’ semifinal loss to France, opened the scoring in the fourth minute by turning in a cross from Nacer CHADLI. England, who fell to Croatia in extra time, came within about a yard of equalising in the 70th minute, but Eric DIER’s shot was cleared off the line by Toby ALDERWEIRELD. Eden HAZARD added Belgium’s second on a counterattack in the 82nd.

After the final whistle, Belgium were awarded their third place medals, having achieved their best result in their 13 appearances at the Men’s World Cup. England finish in fourth for the second time in their history, matching their 1990 result.
