France move on to final with victory over Belgium
[WED 11 JUL 2018 – 06:45:44 UTC]

France defeated Belgium 1-0 on TUE 10 JUL 2018 in the first semifinal of the 2018 Men’s World Cup. They advance to their third Men’s World Cup final in twenty years, where they will face the winner of the Croatia-England match.

Affairs were even in the first half in St Petersburg as both sides had their opportunities, but the goalkeepers at either end – Belgium’s Thibaut COURTOIS and France’s Hugo LLORIS – were up to the challenge. As the half wound down, it was Courtois who kicked out to save a shot by Benjamin PAVARD, and the teams went into the dressing rooms goalless.

But Les Bleus went out in front six minutes into the second half. Samuel UMTITI beat his man, Marouane FELLAINI, to the post on a corner by Antoine GRIEZMANN and was able to head it in at the opposite post. Belgium responded by bringing in Dries MERTENS, who immediately injected life into the Red Devils’ attack; one of his crosses, after taking a deflection, fell to Kevin DE BRUYNE, but he was unable to make his effort count.

In the end, Belgium were unable to force the match into extra time, and they must content themselves with an opportunity to improve by one on their fourth place finish in 1986. France, meanwhile, will take part in their third final, all in the last twenty years, with their eye on lifting the trophy for the second time.
