• Australia 00-02 Peru: A perfectly placed volley from André CARRILLO put the Incas ahead in the 18th minute. Australia, needing a victory to remain alive, fought back valiantly but could not break through, and Paolo GUERRERO added a second to ensure the Socceroos’ elimination.
• Denmark 00-00 France: Denmark were content to play out the draw that would send them through from Group C. Olivier GIROUD’s shot over the bar near the end of the first half was the closest either side got to a goal.
• Iceland 01-02 Croatia: Iceland needed to win by multiple goals to have any chance of advancing out of Group D, but an effective Croatian defense precluded that possibility. Milan BADELJ and Ivan PERIŠIĆ scored in the second half for the Blazers, with Gylfi SIGURÐSSON adding a consolation goal from the spot for Iceland.
• Nigeria 01-02 Argentina: Croatia’s result opened the door for Nigeria and Argentina, and it was the Albiceleste who stormed through it. Lionel MESSI gave Argentina the lead fourteen minutes in, but Victor MOSES equalised from the spot shortly after the interval. In the 80th minute, Nigerian shouts for a penalty were denied when referee Cüneyt ÇAKIR ruled, after a video review, that no deliberate handball occurred when the ball rebounded off Marcos ROJO’s arm following a header. Moments later, Rojo volleyed in a cross from Gabriel MERCADO to secure Argentina’s place in the last sixteen.
